Where to eat when my family comes home? Pizzeria GM
By Jan Walsh
Whenever my “boys” come home, they arrive with reservations, restaurant reservations. Beforehand they each spend much time looking at menus on BirminghamRestaurants.com, while texting back and forth with each other… planning where they want to go eat while in town. At the top of the list is their tried and true, Pizzeria GM. No wonder. Their menu is so much more than pizza that sometimes we must skip their amazing, old school pizzas. Famous dishes from the Respinto’s original Homewood restaurant, GianMarco’s are found on the menu along with other of Giani’s selections of small plates, salumi and cheese, salads, sandwiches, and desserts.
We start with a staggering parade of small plates… Kev and I never miss the Wagyu Beef Pigs in a Blanket and Bocconcini. In addition to these small plates, Jordan and Ross add Meatball Appetizer, Bucket of Fries, and Potato Chips. What a feast! And we are just getting started. Pizzeria GM’s handcrafted cocktails are also not to be missed. Thus, we pair these starters with Blackberry Farm Brewery’s Saison, Bloody Mary, and Pomegranate cocktail.Four marvelous meatballs arrive in an iron skillet, on a bed of silky Sunday sauce, smothered in melted provolone, in this three-dimensional, carnivore’s dream. The fries achieve Boardwalk, NJ perfection of pure potato that is absolutely addictive. The thin, fresh chips tell their house made secret in every crisp and tasty bite, and are served with a thick, creamy, and porky Conecuh Bacon and Gorgonzola Dip. Our forever, fun, favorites of full-bodied pigs in a blanket and bocconcini bombs bring another shameless round of beef and cheese. As always both the bread and the “hotdog” inside are equally cooked to perfection. And the golden bocconcini, still my favorite, is crunchy on the outside and bursting with piping hot mozzarella on the inside, making my mouth a happy place.
For entrees, Ross is excited to see the Breaded and Fried Tuscan Beef and Pork Ravioli still on the menu. He loved it last time he was here, starts raving about it at the table, and soon talks Jordan into ordering it too. Plump pieces of fried pasta are overfilled with a superb synthesis of pork and beef, slathered in tomato sauce and blanketed with Parmesan and melted mozzarella. Highly recommended! Kev and I order the Fried Chicken Tenderloin Sandwich, which is another tried and true selection. The golden, moist, and tender chicken breast is comfort on a brioche bun, boasting buttermilk ranch dressing, sliced pickles, and crunchy slaw. And never getting our fill of the fries we have them as its side.
