Bread for Thought

The making of a weekend bread list from Birmingham Breadworks…

By Jan Walsh

Mothers never stop thinking and overthinking. This was well played in the movie, What Women Want… We want a happy, healthy family! And when my family heads home for the weekend, I start planning with a Birmingham Breadworks list, where breads only include water, salt, and yeast. And now with online ordering on their website, I have time to shop at my leisure and send someone to pick it up. And anything on my list that is not available in the online ordering system can also be picked up.

Most of my family loves sourdough. Others insist on farm bread. Check. Check. Pre sliced or no? These two breads will be used for morning toast and egg sandwiches. Birmingham Breadworks offers fresh farm eggs, which arrive each Tuesday. Better get three dozen.

Knowing Courtney must work today, Jordan can make sandwiches when they arrive later tonight of Birmingham Breadworks house made chicken salad, pimento cheese, and egg salad. Better get quarts, not pints.

Expecting the weekend to be one big party, as always, these will also satisfy midnight cravings, making more quick sandwiches. And they will round out impromptu charcuterie boards, which reminds me I need baguettes.

Given I am ordering for Thursday pick up, I add the daily bread of pumpernickel. Hmm, maybe I should have a bread tasting so everyone gets a taste of all the breads?

Birmingham Breadworks has a different daily bread Mondays through Saturdays. Next time maybe I will pick up on Fridays so we can have the challah? Owner, Mike McElwain highly recommends it for making French Toast. On second thought, I am the only one who can make French toast… Less work than French Toast are Birmingham Breadworks pastries. Kev loves the Cream Cheese Danish and ham and cheese croissant. Chocolate croissants for Ross… Everyone will enjoy fruit turnovers, cinnamon rolls, and bagels. I’ll add them to the list! Did I forget anything?
