Oh, Mama!

We pair surf and turf burrito bowls with melon margaritas.

By Jan Walsh

I am not much of a planner. But when I go to Taco Mama, I have my order ready… because I want everything listed on their colorful boards.

Today Kev and I are not having our usuals. We are going to dive into the Burrito Bowls. But first things first. It is watermelon season. So we start with a pitcher of seasonal Watermelon Margaritas. The tall, cold pitcher arrives to our table with two, salted rim cups. My grandfather taught me that watermelon needs salt. So, it only follows that watermelon margaritas need it too. We add salt to the pitcher and pour. Chunks of melon and an occasional seed reveals this margarita is made with real, Southern watermelon, before we taste it. Indeed, this libation is thirst quenching, not too sweet or over complicated, and is bursting with fresh watermelon flavor.

We pair our melon margs with The Big Client for Kev and The Hippie Fisherman for me. Yet a last-minute fear of regret triggers orders of three flour tortillas, which we can use to make our own tacos at the table, should we choose to. Kev’s bowl is filled with tender, shredded Barbacoa (braised beef) that boasts savory, rich, deep short rib flavor. Rounding out the bowl are refried beans, queso, shredded cheddar, tomatoes, and mild salsa ranchera. He highly recommends! The Barbacoa is also available as tacos in the Taco Basket section of the menu.

The Hippie Fisherman offers options of grilled or fried flounder of grilled Gulf shrimp. I selected the shrimp. They arrive floating on a mix of ancho chile slaw, diced tomatoes, and an amazing roasted poblano tartar. My three warm flour tortillas are wrapped in foil and begging to be filled. I spoon my burrito mix into a shell. I pour queso on top. And just like that, The Hippie Fisherman becomes at scrumptious soft taco of succulent shrimp, cheese, slaw, and tomatoes. Freshly made white tortilla chips accompany both our orders, which we dip in salsa and queso, while sipping watermelon margaritas until our hearts are content.
