billy's english village closes Farewell Friend

Billy’s Sports Grill, English Village closes after 40 years.

By Jan Walsh

Due to inability to negotiate their lease at the English Village location, Billy’s Sports Grill, is set to close doors on July 14, after 40 years. Although a search was done for an alternate English Village location, it was not successful.

Billy’s in English Village has been a tradition for many in Mountain Brook and beyond—including my family. And they have been a Member Restaurant of Birmingham Restaurants, since the day we launched, March 1, 2007. I recall sitting in the window at Billy’s, looking across the street at the former newsstand business, which had a 10-foot poster with my Birmingham magazine cover story, “50 Favorites,” hanging in the window—featuring Billy’s Shrimp Salad as the cover photo. Birmingham Restaurants syndicated 50 Favorites that year and continued the awards annually ever since. Among the other Billy’s notable dishes to win the award in the years that followed include their award-winning wings, fried olives, seafood nachos, Ruben sandwich, Santa Fe salad, chicken quesadilla, burger, signature chicken sandwich, blackened mahi special, and banana pudding.

Fortunately, this closing does not affect Billy’s at Liberty Park and Northport. So, we will carry on our Billy’s tradition, in our own neighborhood of Liberty Park. Here we have been regulars since they opened and continue to enjoy the patio, love music, game watching, and sharing a meal with family and friends.
